Please help us in welcoming Meryl Engler to Akron, Ohio!
Meryl Engler grew up in Huntington Beach, California playing lots of different sports, hanging out on the beach, and drawing as much as possible. Meryl made a big transition to attend Syracuse University where she studied sculpture, printmaking, religious studies, and history, and also competed on the women’s rowing team. Next, she attended graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for studio art with an emphasis in printmaking. This is where she developed her love of colorful woodcut prints. Meryl has shown her work in Lincoln, Syracuse, Los Angeles, Houston, and internationally. For the past three years, Meryl has coached rowing at Lake Oswego Community Rowing outside Portland Oregon. She is so excited to explore Akron while getting to make art full-time again at Rubber City Prints.
Monica Pirie is an American artist based in the Midwest. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Painting from the University of Akron, Myers School of Art in 2019. From there she became a studio fellow in Avant Garden Studios in part of a citywide small business initiative, called the Bounce Innovation Hub. Pirie currently works full-time as an industrial silk screen printer and part-time as an art instructor with the City of Akron’s Recreation and Park’s Department.
Pirie focuses on interdisciplinary study as she develops her bodies of work, allowing each specific methodology to inform the next. As she begins her Artist-In-Residency year with Rubber City Prints, Pirie will be focusing on Silk Screen Printing, and its applications in wearable art, fashion, interior design, and mural design.
